How to Use Current Events to Create Content

I don’t know about you guys, but I am still on a high from yesterday. A Black Woman is Madam Vice President of the United States.

I mean WOW!

Disclaimer: I am aware of her questionable past policies, but let’s not act like this isn’t a milestone. Okay? Okay. Thank you, moving on.

One of the biggest things talked about were the outfits worn by Madam Vice President Harris, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and former First Lady, Michelle Obama. The ladies came locked and loaded with the fashions and let’s definitely not forget the Biden grandchildren!

The word of the day yesterday was definitely monochromatic.

As I scrolled my timeline on both Instagram and Twitter, I started thinking about how content creators could use current events as a way to create more content.

One brand I see do this well is @Fatkiddeals. The account is an Amazon Associate member and they tweet links for items at a discounted price. They are always using current events to sell products. They do it organically so it doesn’t feel salesy or forced.

Content creation can be overwhelming at times and with how quickly social media moves, you want to be sure you’re keeping your followers engaged. This is why using current events as inspiration will keep your content fresh and it doesn’t hurt SEO either especially if your content is directly linked to a trending topic.

I tweeted the above yesterday. There was a consensus on the timeline yesterday. The monochromatic looks were in and everybody is ready to eventually go outside and recreate those looks. But as a content creator, how do you capitalize off the trending topics?

Today, I’m going to go over two ways to use current events to create content.

Repurpose old content

Maybe you’ve already created content that deals with the current trending topic. Remind your followers and audience. Send out an email blast or send a tweet linking to the old content. You now have evergreen content and it didn’t take you days to create it.

Develop new content

Using yesterday as an example, if you’re a makeup artist or fashion blogger you could use it to recreate looks based on the monochromatic looks. There were about six looks everyone talked about so those are six different styles or variations to choose from. That would keep your audience engaged over the next week. Depending on your engagement and following, you may have to have a quick turnaround time on this one especially if you’re still growing your brand.

When creating your content be sure to utilize it across different platforms, this is especially important for video content. You should post to Instagram (Reels and IGTV), Youtube, and TikTok. This will help you grow your audience across multiple platforms. As content creators, we sometimes focus on only one platform at a time, but social media is so vast and should be used to full its fullest potential.

I’ll be back soon discussing the pros and cons of each platform. Sign up for my email list. I’m launching my newsletter in mid-February. You don’t want to miss out.
